A geologist and oceanographer, Leinen is the chief science officer at Climos, a private firm working to commercialize oceanic iron fertilization for carbon sequestration. Previously, she served as the assistant director for geosciences at the National Science Foundation, as well as holding several administrative positions at the University of Rhode Island.
All of the participants in this roundtable have agreed that geoengineering research is necessary--although not all of us agree on whether experimental research in the open environment is necessary (or a good idea) in addition to theoretical research, modeling, and laboratory research.
All geoengineering techniques raise some common (and complicated) questions: Should legitimate research activities continue? Should experimental as well as theoretical research take place? Who decides whether an experiment or project can go forward?
