A pioneer in the field of elementary particle physics and the first
director of one of the most productive research facilities ever built, W. K.
H. “Fief” Panofsky served as an adviser at the
highest-level of government who advocated reason and restraint in the
ongoing discussion of nuclear power and nuclear weapons. The following is an
excerpt from his forthcoming autobiography, Panofsky on Physics,
Politics, and Peace: Pief Remembers (Springer). A frequent contributor
to the Bulletin for many years, Panofsky died on September
24, 2007 at the age of 88. We will miss his brilliance, courage, and
compassion.
