Given the fact that changes in the European energy market can have significant geopolitical effects, it might seem like EU emissions-cutting policies motivated by climate change could cause serious changes in the EU–Russia relationship. However, a closer inspection of the history of this relationship shows that there are far more influential factors affecting the situation, first and foremost the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
