The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is pleased to announce Steve Fetter as the newest member of the organization’s Science and Security Board.
“Steve Fetter’s deep expertise in public policy, including his leadership at the national security and international affairs division in the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, make him an outstanding addition,” said Robert Rosner, Chair of the Science and Security Board. “Steve has been intimately involved in the policy-making arenas of those issues at the core of the Bulletin’s mission. We are honored to have him join us.”
The Science and Security Board is composed of a select group of globally recognized leaders with a specific focus on nuclear risk, climate change, and disruptive technologies, and provides the organization with objective external perspective on trends and issues in these fields. Responsibilities include serving as the editorial advisory board of the Bulletin, setting the time of the Doomsday Clock, and tracking trends in global security.
“I am delighted to be joining the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists,” said Fetter regarding his new position on the board. “The Bulletin is dedicated to informing the public and policy-makers about critical issues that the world is waking up to, and to which I have dedicated my career. I look forward to serving with this historic organization.”
Fetter graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a S.B. in physics before receiving a Ph.D. in energy and resources from UC Berkeley in 1985. He served for five years in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy during the Obama Administration, where he led the environment and energy division and later the national security and international affairs division. He is a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists board of directors and the National Academy of Sciences Committee on International Security and Arms Control. He currently holds the positions of associate provost and dean of the graduate school and professor of public policy at the University of Maryland.
