President Donald Trump and other conservatives accuse mainstream social media platforms of censorship. At the same time, after mass shootings in places like El Paso and elsewhere, a lot of people are watching Facebook and other networks to see how well they do at tamping down dangerous hate speech and disinformation.
Conversely, the far-right platform Gab is actively welcoming the haters and conspiracists that have been kicked off other platforms. Gab seems to want to make itself a marketplace of ideas for sowing societal polarization and discord online.
