The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists will host a live international news conference at 10 a.m. EST/1500 GMT on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, to announce the 2021 time of the Doomsday Clock. The news conference will take place virtually via Zoom. Watch the announcement live on our website or on our Facebook page.

  • I had hopes that with trump not getting reelected the clock could be moved back. however, with what transpired with take over of Capitol on 1/6/21 and continuing threat from far right extremist represent and the surge in recruiting they are undergoing I do not foresee it moving back.

    • I disagree in the sense that U.S. political polarization is a threat to international security, unless of course polarization evolves to an armed conflict, which I think is highly unlikely....for now. The far greater threat to global security, especially for the next 10 - 30 years is an increasingly belligerent and hegemonic CCP whom have made it no secret that they want to displace every liberal democracy that exists today, by coercion or by force and to create a global community in their own image.

      If anything, polarization and the increasing prevalence of extremist political syndicates here in the U.S., left and right, is exactly what the CCP wants to better effectuate their strategic initiatives. If China succeeds in the end, the outcome will not be anything anyone of us wants.

      I guess the only good news is that there is bipartisanship in terms of our government towards China.

  • The pandemic of course will be a factor in moving the clock forward. But I believe a stronger factor is the degradation of truth and the loss of trust in the US democracy by way of portraying the Biden win as a stolen election.
