The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is delighted to announce its 2022 officers for both its Governing and Science and Security boards effective Jan. 1, 2022.
Assuming the role of chair of the Governing Board is Dave Kuhlman, a managing partner at Axiom Consulting Partners. He previously served as the Bulletin’s first vice chair and a member of the Executive Committee.
“I look forward to guiding this important organization through its next phase,” Kulman said. “I’m so grateful for John’s remarkable leadership over the past three years and I hope to continue his success.”
The Bulletin’s Governing Board sets the strategic direction of the organization; ensures it operates in a legal, ethical, and professional manner; participates in Doomsday Clock discussions; represents the Bulletin at public events; and assists in fundraising.
John Balkcom, a longtime adviser to management and boards, will assume the role of second vice chair and he will continue to serve on the Bulletin’s Executive Committee. He called his three years as the Governing Board’s chair “a privilege.”
“I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such a dedicated group of volunteer board leaders who are passionate about the Bulletin’s success,” he said. “I know Dave Kuhlman will be successful in the chair role and I look forward to working with him as a continuing member of the Governing Board.”
Daniel Holz and Sharon Squassoni will assume the role of co-chairs of the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board (SASB). Holz is a professor at the University of Chicago in the Departments of Physics, Astronomy & Astrophysics, the Enrico Fermi Institute, and the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics. Squassoni is a research professor at the Institute for International Science and Technology Policy, Elliott School of International Affairs, at the George Washington University. They will succeed Robert Rosner, who served as SASB chair for nine years. Jerry Brown, the Bulletin’s executive chair called Rosner a notable leader who showed “clarity, empathy, and commanded respect.” Rosner was honored at the Bulletin’s signature Conversations Before Midnight annual event in November for his contributions to the organization.
“I am excited about handing over these responsibilities to the next generation of leadership,” Rosner said. “These are challenging times for the issues the Bulletin covers, and I believe Sharon and Daniel will do an exceptional job leading the SASB forward.”
The Bulletin’s Science and Security Board is responsible for: setting the hands of the Doomsday Clock; representing the organization at public events, serving as the Editorial Advisory Board of the Bulletin; providing editorial and program advice to the staff of the Bulletin; tracking and advising the governing board and the president and CEO on risks relating to man-made existential threats; and identifying new experts as contributors to the Bulletin and for membership on the SASB.
“The Bulletin has made important strides under John and Bob’s leadership” said Rachel Bronson, the Bulletin’s president and CEO. “They leave big shoes to fill, and I am looking forward to working with Dave, Daniel, and Sharon as we connect with bigger audiences determined to create a safer more secure future.”
