Assistant Director of Communications
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is a media organization, publishing a free daily news website and a digital subscription magazine. But we are much more. The Bulletin’s website, iconic Doomsday Clock, and regular events help advance actionable ideas at a time when technology is outpacing our ability to control it. The Bulletin focuses on three main areas: nuclear risk, climate change, and disruptive technologies. What connects these topics is a driving belief that because humans created them, we can control them. With smart, vigorous prose, multimedia presentations, and information graphics the Bulletin puts issues and events into context and provides fact-based debates and assessments.
The Bulletin is an independent, nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization. We gather a diverse array of the most informed and influential voices tracking man-made threats and bring their innovative thinking to a global audience. We apply intellectual rigor to the conversation and do not shrink from alarming truths. For 75 years, the Bulletin has bridged the technology divide between scientific research, foreign policy and public engagement.
Assistant Director of Communications reports to our Chief Digital Officer (CDO), who works closely with our editorial and leadership team. This full-time position will help set and guide the strategy for all communications, as well as website, social media and public relations messages to consistently articulate the Bulletin’s activities and mission. The Director of Communications will ensure that the Bulletin is viewed as a leading source, disseminator, and conduit of information within this diverse network and constituent base. This is a full-time position.
The Assistant Director of Communications will work closely with the Digital Operations group as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.
We’re looking for an energetic, creative public relations professional who is data-driven and a has an update-to-date, diverse set of news industry contacts. Experience and comfort with video editing and production, as well as programs such as InDesign and Photoshop, are a plus.
While we favor a Chicago-based assistant director, the right candidate can live in any U.S. time zone. Our office is located at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. Candidates who thrive on innovation and a fast-paced workplace will feel at home.
- Help develop, implement, and evaluate communications plans across the network’s distinct audiences in collaboration with the Bulletin’s team and constituents
- Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities
- Create cross-platform messaging that is on-brand and unforgettable
- Coordinate closely with the CDO on issues regarding webpage maintenance—ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly
- Develop a communications plan, in consultation with the Bulletin’s team, to generate interest in the Doomsday Clock’s 75th anniversary in 2022
- Manage and grow our list of all media contacts
- Develop social media assets (videos, cards, memes) and ensure they amplify the Bulletin’s content and mission
- Track and measure the level of engagement within the network over time
- Develop multimedia sources to convey Bulletin generated information
- Field media and reprint rights inquires
- Work with partners on cross-promotion of events, etc, including outreach to listservs
- Create video marketing content for our Annual Dinner, social channels
The Bulletin is seeking an accomplished Assistant Director of Communications who has at least 5 years of communications experience, ideally in an “in-house” role within a complex (number and variety of constituents) entity, and covering areas such as website content, newsletter development, and experience working with the media. Nonprofit experience a plus. The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels is critical.
- Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies
- Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
- Multimedia experience (Photoshop, InDesign, Adobe Premiere, etc.)
- Facility with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube)
- Video production experience (animation programs a plus)
- A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
- Experience with Pardot / Salesforce is desirable
- Maturity and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
- Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
- Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives and being proactive
