The editorial cartoon above, titled “A quick word from everyone’s favorite environment” is a reflection on the news courtesy of artist Mo Willems, who lives in an arts community about 100 miles west of Boston. Best-known as a children’s book illustrator—he created the phenomenally successful “Elephant and Piggie” series, which has sold millions of copies and been on the New York Times best-seller list for months at a time—Willems also tackles other topics and art forms. (Before becoming an illustrator, Willems performed standup comedy, wrote for television, and drew comics.)
His work was the subject of a February 6 New Yorker magazine article last year, “Mo Willems’s funny failures” and was recently exhibited by the New York Historical Society in a retrospective called “The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems.”
