A group of 211 mayors from across the country have joined 10 governors in renouncing President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement—and in fact, have vowed to do the opposite. Under the auspices of the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda, the 211 (and counting) have committed to adopt the global climate agreement of their own accord. “As 211 mayors representing 54 million Americans, we will adopt, honor and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement,” they announced in a joint statement.
Governors Jerry Brown of California, Andrew Cuomo of New York, and Jay Inslee of Washington state announced the formation of the United States Climate Alliance, a “coalition that will convene US states committed to upholding the Paris Climate Agreement and taking aggressive action on climate change.” As of Sunday, 10 states had signed on, including two—Massachusetts and Vermont—with Republican governors. The Republican-run states of Ohio, Maryland and New Jersey have hinted that they also wish to join, as has Puerto Rico.
