Following what critics considered a perfunctory investigation, a World Health Organization team wrote in March that a laboratory origin of COVID-19 was “extremely unlikely,” a lower probability event, they said, than the pandemic having originated with frozen food.
Far from settling the debate over the origins of the coronavirus, the WHO report seems to have ignited only more calls from scientists and government officials for a comprehensive investigation, and US President Joe Biden recently gave intelligence agencies 90 days to search for clarity on whether a lab leak could have sparked the pandemic. But regardless of what any future investigation reveals, one thing will still be true: The risk of a lab accident involving a natural pathogen—or even a lab-enhanced germ—has only increased in recent years.
Biomedical research is clearly important (think COVID-19 vaccines). But there are plenty of serious laboratory- and research-related risks that experts say better oversight could help minimize. Whether through the proliferation of high-containment disease research labs in the name of biodefense or the permitting of so-called “gain-of-function” studies that actually make germs more dangerous, some research may be producing opportunities for catastrophe rather than illuminating scientific results.

My thoughts on the origins issue haven’t much changed since early 2020. Perhaps it’s a fool’s errand, but I still find myself estimating and comparing the odds of two low-probability events: 1. a novel coronavirus outbreak emerging from a coronavirus research lab versus 2. natural spillover in Wuhan.
I’m interested to hear what probability other people are assigning to each scenario. Here are my own estimates: 1. For lab-leak accident, outbreak of 1,000 or more coronavirus infections might happen once in 500 to 50,000 years. 2. For natural spillover in Wuhan, outbreak of 1,000 or more coronavirus infections might happen once in 1,000 to 14,000 years.
For the lab-leak estimate, I used the risk assessment for the infectious disease labs at Boston University. The Boston labs report says 1,000+ infections of 1918 H1N1 flu might happen once in 10,000–1 million years. We could assume the same risk for the Wuhan labs and a SARS2-like virus, but it may depend on your confidence in the WIV. I multiplied the risk by 20 because of SARS2 characteristics, reports of the WIV doing coronavirus work in BSL2, and allegedly risky virus collecting. This of course assumes a SARS2-like virus is in the lab – doesn’t address the question of how the virus would get there. For the natural emergence estimate, I based the upper range (14,000 years) on assuming five global outbreaks per century of 1,000+ infections of novel coronavirus. Wuhan population is 11 million, global is nearly 8 billion. I assumed chances of outbreak in Wuhan are same as everywhere else. I based the lower range (1,000 years) on coronavirus outbreaks being more likely in region adjacent to Wuhan, more likely to spread in big city, more likely detected in large modern city.
Conclusion: I don’t know which of the two low-probability events happened, but neither event seems extremely unlikely compared to the other.
Just had to get that allegation of gross and willful incompetence from President Trump into the article, didn't you? In fact, it was Trump's insight and management that got us massive amounts of very effective vaccine well ahead of the rest of the world in the face of nay-sayer comments that it couldn't be done. He recognized that only a broad and effective vaccine program could stop the pandemic, and it has in the U.S.
There are two striking features of the pandemic debate.
We destroyed the primary barriers to pandemics and have no will to re-impose them. At one time every major port had a quarantine station. Ships provided time for infected people to become sick. Custom agents went aboard ships, checked on people’s health and if there were any question, put those people or the entire ship in quarantine. Air travel destroyed the time delay from traveling from country to country. Either President Trump or President Biden could have imposed quarantine for everyone coming into the country but chose not to—they limited foreigners from some countries but not returning Americans and thus assuring every new more-dangerous variant of Covid-19 would quickly enter the U.S. Given a choice of seriously restricting air travel for all Americans or quarantine for all arrivals or thousands of American deaths, they both chose air travel. That would not have been the choice of any President in the 1800s.
The second feature is the arrogance of the scientific community by putting high-hazard biolabs in high-population centers where an infected worker can walk out the door, get on mass transit and infect a 100 strangers before getting home for supper. Common sense would say locate in isolated areas where everyone drives to work that buys time. As a side note, the Dupont and 3M chemical labs were located on large pieces of land outside of town so bad days at the lab did not result in bad days for the public. The same was true for nuclear weapons work at Los Alamos, Oak Ridge and Hanford. Nobody a few decades ago would be so arrogant to place Level 3 and Level 4 laboratories in urban areas.
