A demographer, Chamie is director of research at the Center for Migration Studies, where he also edits the journal, International Migration Review. He is an expert in fertility, population estimates and projections, and population and development policy. From 1993 to 2005, he directed the U.N. Population Division; in 1994, he served as deputy secretary-general for the U.N. International Conference for Population and Development. He lived for several years in a rural Indian village, working in health and family planning and spent six years with the United Nations in Lebanon, witnessing much civil conflict.
