Abi Olvera

Abi Olvera is the Bulletin‘s disruptive technologies editorial fellow. She is an Emergent Ventures-funded independent researcher and Affiliate at the Institute for AI Policy and Strategy. Olvera previously served as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State for over a decade. With roles focusing on China, Egypt, and Senegal, she focused her diplomatic career on emerging technologies, macroeconomic stability, national security, and international coordination. As a board member of Rethink Priorities and the Machine Learning Alignment & Theory Scholars (MATS) fellowship program, Olvera advances research on AI and existential risk. Her TEDx talk and publications highlight the need for policy reforms to combat systemic inequities and enhance government accountability. She is a graduate of University of Richmond and Yale University. She writes the Positive Sum Substack blog on innovation and regulation tradeoffs. She is the author of Underdog’s Guide to Scholarships, the first aid book specifically for U.S. low-income students.
