Álvarez Valdés is an associate researcher in the doctoral program at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Chile’s University of Santiago (USACH) and an adjunct professor in international relations and international conflict analysis at USACH and at Universidad Mayor. From 2007 to 2013, he was director of a project known as "Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament: A Latin American Perspective," funded by the Norwegian government. Álvarez is a member of the Nuclear Security Governance Experts Group and the Fissile Materials Working Group. He is a doctoral candidate at the Institute of Advanced Studies and holds a master’s degree in international political economy from Japan’s University of Tsukuba.
