Avoiding Doomsday for the NPT: Addressing Challenges to the 2026 RevCon

Date: Monday, April 28, 2025
Time: 3:00-4:15 pm EDT
Location: United Nations Headquarters (Conference Room A)
In the 55 years since its creation, the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) has endured many challenges, but the world now finds itself at a reckoning point. The Doomsday Clock is set at 89 seconds to midnight. Longstanding norms and structures of arms control, disarmament, and nonproliferation are under attack. Growing global energy needs may outpace our ability to ensure safe access to and management of civil nuclear energy. The continued health and strength of the NPT is more important than ever, but there are serious obstacles to achieving a successful outcome at the 2026 Review Conference.
Join our esteemed panel for a discussion of these challenges, including nonproliferation threats old and new, progress on a Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone, maintaining the peaceful use of nuclear energy, unfulfilled disarmament obligations, and external factors like regional conflicts. Panelists will also discuss what success actually means in terms of the Review Process and whether new approaches are needed.
Panelists
Thomas Countryman, Chairman of the Board, Arms Control Association
Corey Hinderstein, Vice President for Studies, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace,
Mallory Stewart, Former Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Deterrence, Stability
Alexandra Bell, President and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (Panel moderator)
