Andy Stirling is Professor of Science and Technology Policy in the Science Policy Research Unit at Sussex University where he co-directs the ESRC STEPS Centre. Focusing especially on issues of democracy, power, and uncertainty in science and innovation, he’s sat on many UK and EU science advisory bodies, including on energy policy, toxic substances, GM Crops, science advice and public engagement. Formerly a campaigner and then board member for Greenpeace, he’s served as a an advisor to the Royal Society, Nuffield Council, Demos, Green Alliance, European Science Foundation and on the Research Committee of the ESRC. An elected fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences, he’s a sociology sub-panel member of the 2021 UK ‘Research Excellence Framework’.
