Smith directs the London School of Economics’ Centre for the Analysis of Time Series. His expertise is in data analysis, specifically focusing on nonlinear situations such as weather forecasting. At the London School of Economics, he takes a philosophical approach to using imperfect models to predict real, dynamic systems, especially where they must inform policy or decision making. In addition, recently, he began working on integrating economic and climate models. Last year, he authored the book A Very Short Introduction to Chaos.
