Mirko Himmel is a biochemist working at the Research Group for Biological Arms Control at the University of Hamburg’s Centre of Science and Peace Research. Additionally, he has been responsible for biosafety measures and training in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory. His current research is focused on the development of new methods for preventive biological arms control purposes, including technical confidence-building measures. He also investigates biosecurity issues and potential dual-use research-of-concern activities in the life sciences. He lectures at the University of Hamburg on biomedical ethics and the interplay between biology and peace research.
