Al Assad is the representative for disarmament and regional security of the secretary-general of the League of Arab States. He is also a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters and a member of the Pugwash Council. Since 1996, he has co-chaired the Arab intergovernmental committee working toward a treaty that would ban weapons of mass destruction from the Middle East. Among other publications, he was a contributor to "Nuclear Collisions: Discord, Reform, and the Nuclear Nonproliferation Regime," a 2012 publication of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
