If you have detailed, inside knowledge about something that could negatively affect life on Earth, you can securely and anonymously send us tips that you think the Bulletin should investigate.
What we’re looking for
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists covers a wide range of stories related to the science and technologies that present an existential risk to humanity and the planet. We’re interested in tips with specific and newsworthy information related to our main beats—nuclear risk, climate change, biosecurity, and disruptive technologies like AI. Threats to good governance and democracy compound those existential risks, so concrete information about issues with public offices and office holders is particularly important.
Specific facts and evidence, not opinion, are what make for a good news tip. Tell us what is happening, what the problem is, how you know about it, and how we can find out more. Include documents or any other material that you can share. Let us know what the context is, and why it should matter to the public.
For general story ideas or pitches, or if you want to write for us, please read our submission guidelines and contact us at [email protected].
How to securely send us tips
For tips that are not sensitive, you can email us at [email protected].
For tips that require confidentiality or anonymity, contact us via Signal at @bulletinatomic.01.
Signal is a free messaging app for Android and iOS devices that supports end-to-end encryption and also provides an option for messages to be automatically deleted after a set amount of time. Signal keeps as little user data as possible, and provides a username option to avoid sharing your phone number. That said, it’s important to understand that Signal is not designed to guarantee total anonymity, and no communication system is 100 percent secure.
Note that while we aren't able to monitor for new tips 24/7 and must be selective about what we pursue, we take all tips seriously and will respond individually whenever possible.
Some other considerations for contacting the Bulletin securely:
- Don't contact us from work or workplace devices and networks.
- Don’t contact us on social media platforms like Facebook, Bluesky, etc.
- Avoid telling others that you are reaching out to us, for your own security.
- Please send us text messages, as we won’t answer calls.
