John D. Vienna is an expert in the application of materials science to solving nuclear waste management issues. He was responsible for the development, optimization, and qualification of nuclear waste glasses to enable the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. Vienna also designed glass compositions for the immobilization of wastes in the United States and around the world. Vienna’s research improved the understanding of mechanisms controlling the long-term corrosion of nuclear waste glasses in disposal environments. Vienna holds a PhD in materials science from Washington State University.
