Jill Hruby joins the Science and Security Board

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is proud to welcome Jill Hruby to its Science and Security Board (SASB)—a distinguished group of experts who provide guidance on nuclear risk, climate change, and disruptive technologies. Members of the SASB play a vital role in setting the Doomsday Clock, offering independent insight, and strengthening the Bulletin’s connection to the broader scientific and policy community.
Hruby most recently served as Under Secretary for Nuclear Security at the U.S. Department of Energy and Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) from 2021 to 2025. Prior to her appointment, she spent 34 years at Sandia National Laboratories, retiring as Laboratories Director in 2017.
“I’m honored to join the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board at such a pivotal moment for nuclear affairs worldwide,” said Hruby. “I hope to help sustain a vital community of experts focused on these complex challenges—and to foster deeper public understanding of the risks that shape our global security.”
From 2018 to 2021, Hruby served as the inaugural Sam Nunn Distinguished Fellow and a non-resident Distinguished Fellow at the Nuclear Threat Initiative. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, serves on the Committee for International Security and Arms Control, and is an advisory governor for the Lawrence Livermore Executive Board. She has also contributed her expertise to the Defense Science Board and numerous technical advisory and nonprofit boards.
“In terms of experience and leadership in the nuclear field, Jill Hruby is the Bulletin’s equivalent of a number one draft pick. She will be an absolutely invaluable addition to the Science and Security Board,” said Bulletin president and CEO Alexandra Bell. “She is a relentless force for managing and reducing global threats and we are honored to have her join our ranks at this crucial moment.”
Hruby’s many honors include the Department of Energy Secretary’s Exceptional Service Award, the NNSA Distinguished Service Gold Award, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service.
